First Date Guide: How to Meet Safely, Comfortably and Naturally

What should you keep in mind before, during and after meeting someone from the internet for the first time? A step-by-step guide from choosing the place to the conversation, safety and saying goodbye.

Why make a plan?

Meeting someone from the internet in person is exciting, but the excitement comes with some uncertainty. You know them from photos and messages; you don't yet know their tone of voice, their gestures or how they listen. A small plan reduces that uncertainty: knowing where you'll meet, how long you'll stay and how you'll get home lets you focus on the date itself.

This guide is about both safety and comfort. The goal isn't to scare anyone; it's to make the first meeting a relaxed introduction where both people feel good.

Before the date: take your time getting to know them

You don't have to meet right after you start messaging. Chatting for a few days and, if possible, having a short voice or video call is the easiest way to check that the person you're talking to is who they say they are. Don't rush with someone who always avoids video, keeps finding excuses or whose story changes from one conversation to the next.

Finding something in common also makes the first meeting easier. Having taken the same personality test, sharing a hobby or loving the same place in your city gives you a ready topic once you sit down.

  • Check that what's on their profile matches what they tell you in messages.
  • Suggest a short video call; for an honest person this is usually no problem.
  • Don't share your home address, workplace or daily routine before the first date.
  • If they rush you or ask early for money, gifts or personal details, stop and think.

Choosing the place and time

Pick a busy, well-lit place you know for the first date: a café, a bakery on a lively street, a museum or a park during the day. A home, a car, an empty beach or somewhere out of town isn't right for a first meeting; those can come later as you get to know each other.

Keep it short, too. A coffee or a short walk can be extended if the conversation goes well; if it doesn't, nobody feels obliged to stay out of politeness. Meeting in daylight or early in the evening also makes the trip home easier.

Keep your transport in your own hands

Get to the place on your own and get home on your own. Letting them pick you up means sharing your address early. Public transport, your own car or a ride app: whatever you choose, your way home shouldn't depend on someone else. Make sure your phone is charged and carry a little cash.

Tell someone you trust

Tell a friend or family member who you're meeting, where and when. Sharing their profile name and a screenshot is a good idea too. Make a habit of sending a short "I'm home" message after the date. It doesn't mean you distrust anyone; it's just a sensible habit.

During the date: let the conversation flow

A first date isn't an interview. Instead of firing question after question, really listen and build new questions from their answers. Your shared test answers, a book you've just read, places you've discovered in your city or a dream trip are good starting points.

You don't have to get into heavy topics like past relationships, money or politics on a first date. Respect their boundaries: if they don't want to talk about something, move on without pushing. You can expect the same respect.

  • Keep an eye on your drink; if you left it unattended, order a new one.
  • If you drink alcohol, know your limit; stay in control on a first date.
  • If you feel uncomfortable, you don't need a reason to end the date.

Take signs of discomfort seriously

Some behaviours are clear warning signs on a first date: constantly trying to touch you, not hearing "no", insisting on taking you somewhere else, looking very different from their profile without explaining it, or inconsistencies in their story. If you feel something is off, trust that feeling. You can politely get up and leave, and ask staff for help if needed.

After the date

If it went well, don't hesitate to say so; a short "I had a nice time today" is enough. If it didn't, it's kind not to leave the other person guessing: "It was nice to meet you, but I didn't feel that connection" is much better than silence.

If someone bothers you after the date, keeps writing despite your answer or behaves in a threatening way, use the block and report tools in the app. On Hemdem you can block someone with one tap and report a message or profile; a blocked person can't message you or see you in Discover.

Quick checklist

A quick look at this list before you go lets you keep your mind on the date itself.

  • A busy place you know, during the day or early evening.
  • Your own transport, a charged phone and a little cash.
  • A friend knows where you are and who you're with.
  • Your address, workplace and private details stay with you for now.
  • If you feel uncomfortable, you don't need anyone's permission to leave.
